Only in America could a woman like Naomi Wolf come to be regarded as a philosopher-king. The author of a book about her own vagina has found fault with Edward Snowden for his clarity, eloquence and familiarity with the law under which he will likely be prosecuted.

Well of course Wolf would be discomfited by Snowden’s piercing clarity; after all her strong suit—her comfort zone—lies not in the cerebral cortex but down South.

Actually, scratch that: Wolf’s vagina, or so I read in the unanimously bad reviews her book got, is in as bad a shape as her brain.

UPDATE (6/17): Here are excerpts from Edward Snowden’s Q & A at the Guardian. Warning to Naomi Wolf and others burdened by fishy logic: Nowhere does Snowden mention Wolf’s vagina (the title of her …book). Ergo, he is probably “Not Who He Purports to be.”

1) Why did you choose Hong Kong to go to and then tell them about US hacking on their research facilities and universities?

2) How many sets of the documents you disclosed did you make, and how many different people have them? If anything happens to you, do they still exist?

Answer:

    1) First, the US Government, just as they did with other whistleblowers, immediately and predictably destroyed any possibility of a fair trial at home, openly declaring me guilty of treason and that the disclosure of secret, criminal, and even unconstitutional acts is an unforgivable crime. That’s not justice, and it would be foolish to volunteer yourself to it if you can do more good outside of prison than in it.

Second, let’s be clear: I did not reveal any US operations against legitimate military targets. I pointed out where the NSA has hacked civilian infrastructure such as universities, hospitals, and private businesses because it is dangerous. These nakedly, aggressively criminal acts are wrong no matter the target. Not only that, when NSA makes a technical mistake during an exploitation operation, critical systems crash. Congress hasn’t declared war on the countries – the majority of them are our allies – but without asking for public permission, NSA is running network operations against them that affect millions of innocent people. And for what? So we can have secret access to a computer in a country we’re not even fighting? So we can potentially reveal a potential terrorist with the potential to kill fewer Americans than our own Police? No, the public needs to know the kinds of things a government does in its name, or the “consent of the governed” is meaningless.

Q: Why did you just not fly direct to Iceland if that is your preferred country for asylum?

Answer:

Leaving the US was an incredible risk, as NSA employees must declare their foreign travel 30 days in advance and are monitored. There was a distinct possibility I would be interdicted en route, so I had to travel with no advance booking to a country with the cultural and legal framework to allow me to work without being immediately detained. Hong Kong provided that. Iceland could be pushed harder, quicker, before the public could have a chance to make their feelings known, and I would not put that past the current US administration.

1) Define in as much detail as you can what “direct access” means.

2) Can analysts listen to content of domestic calls without a warrant?

Answer:

    1) More detail on how direct NSA’s accesses are is coming, but in general, the reality is this: if an NSA, FBI, CIA, DIA, etc analyst has access to query raw SIGINT databases, they can enter and get results for anything they want. Phone number, email, user id, cell phone handset id (IMEI), and so on – it’s all the same. The restrictions against this are policy based, not technically based, and can change at any time. Additionally, audits are cursory, incomplete, and easily fooled by fake justifications. For at least GCHQ, the number of audited queries is only 5% of those performed.

Question:

What are your thoughts on Google’s and Facebook’s denials? Do you think that they’re honestly in the dark about PRISM, or do you think they’re compelled to lie?

Perhaps this is a better question to a lawyer like Greenwald, but: If you’re presented with a secret order that you’re forbidding to reveal the existence of, what will they actually do if you simply refuse to comply (without revealing the order)?

Answer:

Their denials went through several revisions as it become more and more clear they were misleading and included identical, specific language across companies. As a result of these disclosures and the clout of these companies, we’re finally beginning to see more transparency and better details about these programs for the first time since their inception.

They are legally compelled to comply and maintain their silence in regard to specifics of the program, but that does not comply them from ethical obligation. If for example Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Apple refused to provide this cooperation with the Intelligence Community, what do you think the government would do? Shut them down?

The gifted Dr. Myron Robert Pauli (who is related to Wolfgang Pauli, a pioneer in quantum mechanics) is a wonderful dad to daughter Anna. Here Myron shares with us the remarkable story of the patriarch Pauli, who came to America the old-fashioned—when no “welfare-bums” were allowed—and sired Myron.

How The Paulis Came to America
By Myron Pauli

At the request of my good friend Ilana Mercer and in honor of Father’s Day, I am writing about how/why relatives named Pauli got to America. My paternal ancestors were Pascheles – but Vienna under Karl Lueger had its own “affirmative action” policy with the goal of 100% non-Jews in the faculty of the University of Vienna. Thus my granduncle Wolf Pascheles became Wolfgang Joseph Pauli. He later had two famous children – Wolfgang Ernst and Hertha Ernestine – both baptized at Mach 1 (Ernst Mach was their godfather!). Grandfather Isadore Pascheles became John Pauli but brother Oscar kept Pascheles and had the good luck to be a Swiss citizen…..

In 1938, Hitler’s Anschluss with Austria meant beatings and sleep deprivation for WWI Captain John Pauli – to relinquish his money to the National Socialists. Grandmother Frederica (related to Jewish Austrian admiral Siegfried Popper!) and John were allowed to leave provided they had a destination. Thankfully, the Chinese consul, Feng-Shan-Ho, defying his own government, issued exit visas to Singapore to thousands of Viennese Jews. However, Prague-born, they faced a small Czech quota and apparently received some help from Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy – to get to America.

My father was in Innsbruck and snuck over the border into Switzerland with a companion who was immediately turned over to the Gestapo by the (very nice!) Swiss but since my father had the excuse of visiting his uncle Oscar in Zurich; they let him in temporarily provided he leave within a month or two. There are actually 3 letters written by his cousin Wolfgang (inventor of the neutrino) to Paul Dirac (inventor of antimatter) to try to get my dad to England because he had a job offer in America provided he made it to England. I don’t know if Dirac helped, but he eventually made it over here! A cousin in Texas, James Utitz, had to certify that my dad would not be a welfare-bum! My father showed up speaking with an English accent and became a stickler for proper English even in Noo-Yawk! Not only did he go ballistic at ads for the “Green Witch Savings Bank” (Greenwich!) – but he complained about Puerto Ricans speaking poor Spanish. Fortunately, he never lived to hear Ebonics!

Cousin Hertha, an actress and historian-author, with the honor of having her books banned by Nazi Germany – went to France and got smuggled out of France through Lisbon (helped by Varian Fry and the “Emergency Rescue Committee”) to the US with her husband and friends Alma Schindler Mahler Gropius Werfel and Franz Werfel. Both Hertha and Franz stopped at the Lady of Lourdes and each wrote a book and a movie (Franz’s – more famous) about the Song of Bernadette.

Wolfgang tried to get Swiss citizenship but the Swiss decided that he “did not satisfy the requirement of assimilation” – so he and wife Franca – with the help of French colleagues – got over to Lisbon and then to Princeton to his old pal Albert Einstein and the Institute of Advanced Studies which labeled Wolfgang as his “spiritual heir.” After 1946, Wolfgang returned to work in Switzerland because he objected to excessive military influence on American physics (which, if nothing else, proves both intelligence and integrity).

Granduncle Oscar held the fort in Switzerland and tried to get family out as best he could. Poignant letters from a distant cousin from the Nazi Kielce ghetto to Oscar prior to her extermination exist (Switzerland was neutral with postal relations with Germany). Oscar’s grandson is Vice President of Global Commercial Intelligence for Merck.

My dad settled in Sunnyside, Queens and wound up with a wife and 2 kids. He loved the country and we had a small country house. We rented out our upstairs to what appeared to be 10% of Puerto Rico (whom, thanks to rent control, we could not evict!) and eventually rented the rest and bought a third house for us. Dad preferred Adlai Stevenson’s erudite English over Eisenhower’s garbled Army-speak, but after rent control, opposing LBJ’s War in Vietnam and inflation, he voted for Nixon! I don’t know what he would think of events nowadays but his work ethic and English perfectionism would not fit in with modern immigration policy!

**************

Barely a Blog (BAB) contributor Myron Pauli grew up in Sunnyside Queens, went off to college in Cleveland and then spent time in a mental institution in Cambridge MA (MIT) with Benjamin Netanyahu (did not know him), and others until he was released with the “hostages” and Jimmy Carter on January 20, 1981, having defended his dissertation in nuclear physics. Most of the time since, he has worked on infrared sensors, mainly at Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC. He was NOT named after Ron Paul but is distantly related to physicist Wolftgang Pauli; unfortunately, only the “good looks” were handed down and not the brains. He writes assorted song lyrics and essays reflecting his cynicism and classical liberalism. Click on the “BAB’s A List” category to access the Pauli archive.

The consequences of one element of the Affordable Care Act to poor, elderly Americans are too horrid and painfully obvious to be dismissed as “unintended consequences.”

Government planners plan on penalizing hospitals that suffer from a condition these vile technocrats have labeled “EXCESS READMISSIONS.”

If we are to deconstruct this Orwellian “doublespeak,” what does “EXCESS READMISSIONS” mean?

Read how the repulsive (Hispanic) Nurse Diesel (NURSE TERESA) addresses a sweet 84-year-old lady, who has been admitted to hospital with pneumonia, and, given her advanced age, will likely need to be readmitted in the future.

Ms. Kerner, you see, has been flagged from what our enlightened technocrats also call a “frequent flyer list”:

NURSE TERESA: My name’s Teresa. I’m one of the nurse practitioners here. How are you?

FREDDA KERNER: I’m doing well thank you.

NURSE TERESA: I’m here to see you because you came up on a special list.

FREDDA KERNER: A special list of what?

NURSE TERESA: You’re on a special list of patients who are back here. To tell you the truth Medicare is now looking at this very closely.

EMILY SENAY [narration]: THERE’S A NEW PROGRAM HERE AT ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY LIKE MANY OTHER HOSPITALS AROUND THE NATION. IT TARGETS PATIENTS LIKE 84 YEAR OLD FREDDA KERNER – WHO THE HOSPITAL CALLS A FREQUENT FLYER. THAT’S BECAUSE SHE KEEPS COMING BACK.
SHE WAS FIRST HOSPITALIZED IN JANUARY WITH ABDOMINAL PAIN. TEN MONTHS LATER IN NOVEMBER, SHE WAS READMITTED WITH PNEUMONIA.

EMILY SENAY: Did you know that you were getting weaker and having more trouble breathing at home?

FREDDA KERNER: Oh yes yes yes.

EMILY SENAY: Do you want to come to the hospital again?

FREDDA KERNER: No, as nice as they are, I really would rather stay home.

EMILY SENAY [narration]: THE HOSPITAL IS CERTAINLY INTERESTED IN PROVIDING BETTER CARE FOR PATIENTS…BUT THAT’S NOT THE ONLY REASON TO KEEP SOMEONE LIKE
FREDDA KERNER FROM BEING READMITTED. ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IS ALSO TRYING TO AVOID MEDICARE PENALTIES FOR WHAT THE GOVERNMENT CALLS “EXCESS READMISSIONS.”

IT’S A NEW POLICY THAT WENT INTO EFFECT THIS PAST OCTOBER AS PART OF THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT – MEANT TO SAVE THE GOVERNMENT MORE THAN A QUARTER BILLION DOLLARS JUST OVER THE NEXT YEAR.

MORE.

“A heroic American whistleblower chooses, oh-so wisely, to expose Uncle Sam’s usurpations to the veteran reporters of the British Guardian and not to the partisan hacks of the American press. This fact tells you all you need to know about US presstitutes.

Confirmation of the degree to which American media has been co-opted by power came on June 10, again, via a British newspaper. The Mail Online divulged that Edward Snowden had ‘first approached the Washington Post with his leaks but the newspaper refused to comply with his publishing demands.’

You see, the Washington Post had to hotfoot it back to Big Brother Obama before it would do its journalistic due diligence. ‘The Post broke the story on PRISM two weeks later, on Thursday, after consulting with government officials,’ confirmed the Mail Online.

Even after being scooped by the Guardian, the Obama embeds at the Washington Post saw fit to inform their readers about PRISM on a purely need-to-know basis, ‘eprinting only four of the 41 PRISM PowerPoint slides,’ and generally misrepresenting the nature of the program known as PRISM. The manufactured-in-America version of PRISM thus contradicts the ‘internal NSA documents’ leaked to the Guardian.

According to the guardian of American freedoms at the Guardian, reporter Glenn Greenwald, the 41-slide PowerPoint presentation he acquired from Snowden has been authenticated as a document ‘used to train intelligence operatives on the capabilities of the program.’ The presentation, pictorials with captions, handed out by the National Security Agency, boasts of having ‘direct access to the systems of Google, Facebook, Apple, Yahoo, PalTalk, YouTube in 2010; Skype and AOL, and other servers.’

Contrary to what you’re being told, ‘the world’s largest surveillance organization’ can and does ‘obtain targeted communications without having to request them from the service providers and without having to obtain individual court orders.’ And it is contrary to the Bill of Rights, the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution, in particular. It specifies that ‘warrants shall issue’ only ‘upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.’

Tellingly, the tools of Big Media and big government are not apprising you of these facts. Like a tortoise in its shell they’ve retreated from the watersheds that are the AP, the IRS and the NSA scandals, informing you only of what New York and Northeast elites think is important: “Most of you still like Obama” …

UPDATE I: In his unrehearsed conversation with Glenn Greenwald, Snowden demonstrates analytical clarity, the kind you don’t get from his inferior critics. It comes natural for him to distinguish between NSA posturing for the national interest and reality; between intelligence gathered overseas and domestically; between surveillance of the foreign born and the domestic.

Snowden’s desperation—defecting and leaking as a last resort—is corroborated by other whistleblowers. When you blow the whistle through acceptable NSA channels you can expect cover-ups, heavily redacted reports and retaliation. This is what two veteran intelligence officers relayed to Sean Hannity at Fox News.

UPDATE II: From the Facebook thread. Memorial Day is a way to ensure men die for the state, not for their neighbors. It wasn’t always so, but it has become that. It’s the sad truth. Good men serve their countrymen outside the state. For example, Samuel Williams is an American hero. The same goes for the wonderful JOE HORN.

Like the Bush administration before it, the Obama administration is crying “WMD” at a convenient time in the course of the catalogue of Obaminations it has been inflicting on us.

The same lying “intelligence community” that has been spying on millions of us, “‘estimates that 100 to 150 people have died from detected chemical weapons attacks in Syria to date; however, casualty data is likely incomplete,’ Ben Rhodes, the deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, said in a statement released by the White House.”

Needless to say that CNN, whose website and TV infotainment hours have never headlined with the AP, IRS or NSA stories—is in its element.

Jessica Yellin is yelling, “Barack is back.”

BBC News fails to offer independent verification of the Sarin news, repeating US talking points about this brief being based on a thing called, in Orwellian speak, “a high confidence assessment”:

Mr Rhodes said US intelligence agencies had concluded Mr Assad’s forces had used chemical weapons, including the nerve agent sarin, based on battlefield reports, “descriptions of physiological symptoms” from alleged victims, and laboratory analysis of samples obtained from alleged victims.

It would appear that nothing much has changed on the ground, except in the US. Is the Big Dog wagging the dog?

All I can say is that you must keep your eye on the Snowden story. Don’t let it die (it’s also the topic of my new column).
