These so-called fingernails of the modern age freak me out more than texting.

I paid particular attention to the “long mauve thumbnail…sharpened into a spike.” The juxtaposition between comforting images (of the poet’s mother) and jarring images (of the texter) was noteworthy. I suspect the texter also had short red hair cut at irrational angles, wore lots of makeup, and was wearing headphones to mute the sound (for train passengers) of the hip-hop she listened to while texting.

With your explanation I now understand the poem’s meaning. I guess I had better run to Radio Shack for an update on technology. It’s hard to be a wise old timer these days. Thanks for sharing the poem, I like it, now that I understand it.

We’re never going to see such again. As a member of the unwashed and unsophisticated masses I appreciate your explanation.

The beauty of poetry is that you can basically take away from it whatever you want. Sure the writer (usually) has an idea, but that need not be the same as your’s. Your only duty is to appreciate the techniques with which the artist brings it to life.
