Lost in what Obama heralded in his State of the Union address as “an economy built to last” is Adam Smith’s “Invisible Hand.”
As philosopher Adam Smith’s wisdom went, the public good was optimized when each individual acted in enlightened self-interest—and not when, as preached by Obama, people were roped in the service of a politician’s definition of the common good.
“By pursuing his own interest,” wrote Smith in “The Wealth of Nations,” “[man] frequently promotes that of the society more effectually than when he really intends to promote it. I have never known much good done by those who affected to trade for the public good.”
Alas, when it comes to Barack Obama, the wisdom of Ron White applies. That great satirist from the great State of Texas teaches that “You can’t fix stupid.” “There is not a pill you can take, not a class you can go to. Stupid is forever.”
Obama may be stupid but he’s not unintelligent. He’s dumb like a fox and is well on his way to realizing his dream of the marxist redefining the United States as a bastion of the left. Meanwhile we enlightened few spend our time fretting over Newt’s libido or Mitt’s Sunday school lessons or any one of a thousand issues that mean zilch. We are the stupid ones, not Obama. It’s long past time the left, especially their stenographers in the media, came under serious, unrelenting attack. We just stand around and piss our pants over unimportant details while the stupid left sits back and laughs. A revolting development.
There may be no fixing stupid but that doesn’t preclude it becoming de rigueur.
[Brilliant.]
On a personal note, I just came back from Florida where I saw my old physics mentor, suffering from over a decade of Parkinson’s and numerous other conditions – he can hardly move, talk or see – but his hearing is OK and he listens to physics tapes in the old age home. So I think he could use some fixes to the body ….
There are people at Staples etc. who benefited from the greed of Mitt Romney (who, as a proven businessman should go BACK INTO BUSINESS!). Ron Paul delivered babies. It is hard for me to identify who was “helped” by the likes of Messiah Obama or “Washington outsider” Consultant-Moonman-Newt unless “help” is defined as the government stealing for A and “redistributing” the proceeds to B.
Every time you quote “you can’t fix stupid” I always think of Forrest, Forrest Gump and “stupid is as stupid does”. I’m so sorry to be repetitive here. There is a huge difference between self-interest and selfishness. This seems to be lost on a lot of people…
“By pursuing his own interest,” wrote Smith in “The Wealth of Nations,” “[man] frequently promotes that of the society more effectually than when he really intends to promote it.”
Frequently he does but not always. We need a big dose of the tenth ammendment so this truth can again be manifested and economics can assume its rightful place in the managment of homes instead of Empires.
