She certainly comes off as the kind of self-possessed and talented young person with whom one might be able to carry on a somewhat honest conversation. And someone who isn’t naturally inclined to throw the baby out with the bath water (e.g., her seeming recognition of the longstanding merits of Notes on Virginia). And, pace Lincoln, does her poem not at least admit to the self-evident truth that the states preceded and created the nation? Seems like she’s read a few good books, probably in spite of her professors. I always think that where you find evidence of that, you may have stumbled across one of the few who may eventually discover the truth.

She talks of a wounded world. She talks of rising but utterly failed to realize she can dream however she wants because to those who went before her and created the place she is in and that is America because America is great. This is not an unfinished nation. Her “people” are not battered. America is a great place and her idea that we need to be brave to see it is simply PC nonsense that she’s ingested and poetically presented.
