Looking at the paltry proportion of Israel’s budget coming from various US sources, it’s a wonder anybody in the US thinks they can ‘lean’ on Israel. On the other hand, if you examine the many permutations of the following words : “Congress, power of the purse, support for the Jewish State”, you are then reminded that Israel does a lot of ‘leaning’ of it’s own. Maybe that too should stop.

It seems, from Ambassador Ettinger’s article, that Israel can do just fine without U. S. meddling. I’m glad to hear it, because not only do I agree with Ilana on the foreign aid issue, I also note that “support” from my evangelical Christian brethren has led to Jews being forced to leave Gaza and provisions now on the table (Obama didn’t start it!) for the division of Jerusalem. For much of this we have our co-religionists George W. Bush and Condi Rice to “thank.”

It is not for nothing that God warns us (as Myron has previously pointed out) in 1 Sam. 8 against placing our trust in princes. I would hope that sincere American evangelicals will find ways to support Israel that do not rely on our governmental apparatus; nor indeed, on rather blind trust placed in a governmental “leader.”

(1) One of the more annoying "myths of Munich" is how England and Neville Chamberlain "forced" Czechoslovakia to surrender the Sudetenland to the Nazis. England didn't have a land army capable of forcing anyone to do anything. (2) Each nation must guard the freedom and property of ITS OWN PEOPLE or it evolves into a colonial puppet state (as its detractors claim). Ask Diem and Thieu and the late unlamented "Republic of Vietnam" (e.g. South) with its 1,000,000 man army (on paper), the 1973 Paris "Peace Accord", and its rapid collapse in 1975. (3) If Israel is merely about schnorring for money, then I suggest a good-old fashioned bailout. Let King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia come up with $100,000/Jew or about $600 Billion and 6 million Jews can move to the Blessed Land (Baruch-land or Brooklyn). Each nation must stand up on its own - and foreign aid be damned. (4) If our Messiah of Changenhope can't force North Korea or Iran to do squadoosh, what is he going to a nuclear-powered Israel? (5) Maybe Israel can adopt a FREE MARKET ECONOMY (e.g. end socialism, lower taxes... ) to more than make up for the loss of US aid! [Israel is a Third-Way economy like European countries, and like the US has become. Not quite socialistic.]
