I’m perturbed by the lack of critical assessment on the part of much of the American populace regarding such matters as “picking a side” in every international conflict, including the one in Georgia. If our “leaders” say the Russians are the aggressors, the Georgians the good guys, many Americans will blindly follow.

This reminds me of the “genocide” claim that prompted our bombing of Serbia many years ago. The Kosovar Albanians were the “victims,” the Serbs, the perpetrators. None of this would matter much if the U. S. were not so powerful militarily; the fact that we are should indicate that the lost art of critical thinking be applied before choosing sides.

Ilana, there is some very interesting reading about con-man Chalabi:
dir.salon.com/story/news/feature/2004/05/04/chalabi/ (you can Google Chalabi Israel and it will pop up) – which might explain one reason the US actually believed that invading Iraq would create a Middle-East paradise. However, I would be a bit skeptical about BBC war crimes claims – it is the stuff that both sides use for PR whether true or false – such as the notorious massacre at Jenin:

As usual, the US winds up being the blustering doofus, intervening to make bad situations often worse.
