Edward’s queen, Philippa forgave them and convinced King Edward not to execute the men.

In 1895 Rodin’s sculpture “The Burghers of Calais”, was unveiled in the city. It stands as a magnificent, sombre and brooding representation, of a time when a man’s word truly was his bond.
