King Edward III promised he’d spare the people of the town, if six leaders would surrender. They marched out with nooses around their necks. Edward’s queen, Philippa forgave them and convinced King Edward not to execute the men.

In 1895 Rodin’s sculpture “The Burghers of Calais”, was unveiled in the city. It stands as a magnificent, sombre and brooding representation, of a time when a man’s word truly was his bond.

It’s time for the Zelenskyites to show similar bravery!
