Ilana, my friend, it may do you no good, but I take some comfort in knowing that you took a chance on our country, and that you are in the same boat with the rest of us, in these dark days (currently 11/6). I don’t blame you a bit, to the extent you held off (Dubya? Barry?). I’d be pretty dubious, living in a country with people who elected that pair. Trump gave us all hope that there was some of that Jeffersonian resolve left, to fight back against tyrants. Let’s hope it will manifest itself even more in the coming days.

I’m grateful too that you came to America when you did (2001?), so that you could get a lay of the land, and maybe even gain a certain respect and even love for the place. At least enough that when, by 2011, you could and would frame your magisterial ITCP as a warning for America. That was early enough that it could and maybe did make a little difference. You no doubt know what it means to do your best and have your best arguments fall on deaf ears, but at least you’re on record. I’m at least grateful to have benefited from your wise counsel.

Thank You, Gail, for sharing. I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of the welcome, and also by the appreciation shown me, for what I bring to America. Americans are generous and kind to a fault. My naturalization was a while ago, shorty after Trump was elected. But I have only now spoken about Trump having been the reason. (My husband was skeptical, but went along .)

Ilana,
Congratulations on becoming a U.S. citizen. I have followed your writings for a few years now and appreciate your perspective. I also bought your book, Into the Canibal’s Pot.
My mother came to this country in 1947 with her parents when she was 17. My grandparents were around 37. None of them spoke english. My mom and her mother became domestics to earn money and learned to speak English studying the Wards catalog while doing their chores.
I remember my mother studying her book on U.S. History and getting her citizenship papers in 1963 when I was 13. She was so proud. Both of my grandparents got theirs, too. They were all proud to be Americans.
I hope this country endeavors to deserve you. For myself, I am losing my faith in the America we are starting to see.
