I don’t want and can’t feed this child. My body is broken from having so many kids. My husband is a no-good lout who beats me if I ask him to use a sheath. My life is not worth living.”

These “US religious groups” aren’t wrong, your anti-human and depraved attitude of “better off dead than poor” is what’s wrong here.

From the pro-conservation case I am making—it doesn’t follow not even remotely that I am in the Gates camp. There is a name for that kind of false argumentation you are making. I can’t think of it. But you are making it. How about, for instance, that self-immolating conservatives quit hindering family planning, including abortion, among those third worlders who cannot afford children, and who raise them to become soldiers to war lords? You do know that US religious groups have worked that angle.
