“The Declaration of Independence—whose proclamation, on July 4, 1776, we celebrate this Saturday—has been mocked out of meaning.
To be fair to the liberal establishment, ordinary Americans are not entirely blameless. For most, Independence Day means firecrackers and cookouts. The Declaration doesn’t feature. In fact, contemporary Americans are less likely to read it now that it is easily available on the Internet, than when it relied on horseback riders for its distribution.
Back in 1776, gallopers carried the Declaration through the country. Printer John Dunlap had worked “through the night” to set the full text on “a handsome folio sheet,” recounts historian David Hackett Fischer in “Liberty and Freedom.” And President (of the Continental Congress) John Hancock urged that the “people be universally informed.”
Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration, called it “an expression of the American Mind.” An examination of Jefferson’s constitutional thought makes plain that he would no longer consider the mind of a McCain, an Obama, or the collective mentality of the liberal establishment, “American” in any meaningful way.” …

What can I say about this article except that it is absolutely brilliant! Thanks for writing it.
Regrettably, the English Whig values didn’t get transmittted to George Bush or Ann Dunham’s boy Barack. Those values could still light fires in immigrants from Leninland (Rand), Mandelaland (Mercer), and Hitlerland (my dad), as well as some Anglo-Saxons like Ron Paul. Jefferson said that “Every generation needs a revolution” and we could use one in the direction of liberty. Nevertheless, one of our underrated Presidents, Warren Harding, got it right: “America’s present need is not heroics, but healing; not nostrums, but normalcy; NOT REVOLUTION BUT RESTORATION; not agitation, but adjustment; …not submergence in internationality, but sustainment in triumphant nationality.” Harding also blasted Messiah Wilson’s foreign policy: “Practically all we know is that thousands of native Haitians have been killed by American Marines, and that many of our own gallant men have sacrificed their lives at the behest of an Executive department in order to establish laws drafted by the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. … I will not empower an Assistant Secretary of the Navy to draft a constitution for helpless neighbors in the West Indies and jam it down their throats at the point of bayonets borne by US Marines.” P.S. That Assistant Secretary was FDR!
