Tom Piatak writes a great column about a great American (with whom I’ve disagreed, a fact that has nothing to do with the man’s prescience and patriotism): “Pat Buchanan At 70: ‘He Told You So, You F****ing Fools!’” Read it on VDARE.COM, naturally:
“Both Bush and McCain swallowed the neoconservative line whole. Both see the mission of the United States as using its blood and treasure to spread’ ‘global democratic capitalism.’ Both welcome the mass immigration that is radically transforming the United States. … neither views America as a real country at all, but as the embodiment of an abstract political creed—the ‘first universal nation.’
Buchanan long ago warned that allowing neoconservatives to set the agenda would be calamitous for conservatives. His warning was unmistakably vindicated when the Republicans lost Congress in 2006. And if the American electorate rejects Bush and McCain next Tuesday, it will be rejecting neoconservatism, pure and simple.
Of course, Buchanan opposed the Iraq War that has cast its shadow over Bush’s presidency. He foresaw that removing Saddam Hussein would greatly strengthen Tehran and that an occupation of Iraq would be both costly and deadly.
More generally, Buchanan recognized that the end of the Cold War meant that America must begin reexamining its global commitments and pursuing a foreign policy in line with the one recommended by the Founders—and that failure to do so would be costly.”
The complete column on VDARE.COM.
I’m proud to write that I voted for Pat in 1996 and 2000 for president. I would do it again. Happy birthday to a real American!
Yikes. You voted for Buchanan? Maybe you should buy only American – and then add some extra money to the cost. Buchanan is a mercantilist. Of course, we fought a Revolutionary War because of this. Of course, mercantilism makes everyone poorer.
Of course, Buchanan and his voters (and followers) understand this.
Ahh well – being correct on two out of three points isn’t that bad.
I too voted for Pat back in 2000 and would probably do so again if he were on the ballot tomorrow. He was/is authentically anti-war/pro-republic – as opposed to Obama. It’s amazing how delusional so many on the Left are about Obama. Between the 2 men, there is no question who is truly anti-war/anti-empire.
It is not possible to find a candidate with whom I agree on everything. One must choose which issues are most important and go from there. Buchanan is right on enough important issues that I would gladly vote for him again. He’s a great writer, thinker, and patriot. America would be better served with him in the oval office than either of the two clowns vying for it. So there.
Great argument Dan.
Or maybe not. There is someone else who is superior to Buchanan.
I would stress that small thing known as economic theory if you are to vote for someone.
Hopefully no one on this blog needs to be told exactly what would happen if we favored even more anti-trade legislation…
