What #RandPaul Gives With One Hand, He Takes Away With The Other

Homeland Security, Intelligence, libertarianism, Regulation, Ron Paul, Terrorism, The State

Sen. Rand Paul went astray. His rousing remarks against the renewal of the PATRIOT Act were softened by a call for “the hiring of a 1,000 more FBI agents.” “We need more FBI analysts analyzing data,” said Paul.

Moreover, and as reported at Target Liberty, it is the legal opinion of Judge Andrew Napolitano “that the US government is lying to the American people with the claim that the mass surveillance would be suspended upon the expiration of the PATRIOT Act provision used to justify the mass surveillance program.”

Essentially, the Patriot Act will be revamped, only to reemerge as the USA FREEDOM Act.

Napolitano states:There are two other provisions in the law that the NSA relies on which will cause it to continue to spy on Americans even if section 215 of the PATRIOT Act does expire. One of those is a section of the FISA law called section 702, and one of them is a still-existing executive order signed by President George W. Bush in the fall or 2001, which has not been tinkered with, interfered with, or rescinded.

By Robert Wenzel’s telling, the “best analysis of the Patriot Act renewal and the USA Freedom Act” comes courtesy of “Glenn Greenwald in discussion with Jameel Jaffer, the Deputy Legal Director of the ACLU,” at The Intercept.

The question of whether “the sunset of Section 215 will be a meaningful step towards reform” is especially informative:

GREENWALD: That’s what I was going to ask next, actually.

JAFFER: That’s a good question. The problem –

GREENWALD: Let me just interject there: the argument that people make, and I’m sympathetic to it, which isn’t the same thing as saying I agree with it, is how significant would it really be?

The NSA has all of these other authorities. They can cite executive orders and other things, on top of which they’ve done a really good job of co-opting laws in the past. We had this FISA law that said you can’t eavesdrop on Americans’ communications without a warrant, and they did it anyway.

They invented this incredibly radical interpretation of the Patriot Act – of 215 – that says “This lets us collect everything we want,” and that was the interpretation the Second Circuit, ten years later, rejected, finally, just a couple of weeks ago.

So given how adept they are at kind of co-opting the process to do what they want – the other authorities – and their propensity to circumvent the law or even break it to do what they want, how significant would it really be?

#Tsarnaev Spared Being Buried Alive In A #Supermax Prison

Crime, Justice, Law, Terrorism

Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev “was sentenced Friday to join his brother in hell,” as New York Daily News put it, “for that brutal attack with pressure-cooker bombs at the finish line.”

This is what life would have looked like had Tsarnaev been sentenced to life in the United States Penitentiary Administrative-Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado, which a warden likens to “life after death.”

More like being buried alive.

A Supermax prison is reserved for the most dangerous offenders. Once inside this concrete catacomb, the inmate will never again see the sky again. He is placed in leg irons, a belly chain, handcuffs and will have 12 gun towers trained on him at all times. The inmate’s private tomb is 84 square feet of concrete where he will spend 23 hours a day.

Death is more merciful than to be buried alive in a Supermax prison.

UPDATED: #Boer Mercenaries Bust #BokoHaram

Africa, South-Africa, Terrorism

“If there’s somethin’ strange in your neighborhood, Who you gonna call?” Boko Haram busters. Or Boer “bush warfare experts” form South Africa. Yes, “Mercenaries from South Africa have proved quietly decisive in helping the Nigerian military turn around its campaign against Boko Haram,” writes Colin Freeman from Abuja. Note the dainty disclaimer offered by the Telegraph writer:

With their roots in South Africa apartheid-era security forces, they do not fit the standard image of an army of liberation. But after just three months on the ground, a squad of grizzled, ageing [sic] white mercenaries have helped to end Boko Haram’s six-long year reign of terror in northern Nigeria.

That’s in case you dare think Boers have ever fought for anything noble—unlike mass murdering commies like Che, Castro, Stalin, Lenin, the cuties of the Khmer Rouge, on and on.

… Run by Colonel Eeben Barlow, a former commander in the South African Defence Force, the group of bush warfare experts were recruited in top secrecy in January to train an elite strike group within Nigeria’s disorganised, demoralised army.

Some of the guns-for-hire cut their teeth in South Africa’s border wars 30 years ago. But their formidable fighting skills – backed by their own helicopter pilots flying combat missions – have proved decisive in helping the military turn around its campaign against Boko Haram in its north-eastern strongholds. …

… “The campaign gathered good momentum and wrested much of the initiative from the enemy,” said Col Barlow, 62. “It was not uncommon for the strike force to be met by thousands of cheering locals once the enemy had been driven from an area.”

He added: “Yes, many of us are no longer 20-year-olds. But with our age has come a knowledge of conflicts and wars in Africa that our younger generation employees have yet to learn, and a steady hand when things get rough.”

During apartheid, Col Barlow served with the South African Defence Force … Col Barlow’s new company is known as STTEP, which stands for Specialized Tasks, Training, Equipment and Protection. It is thought to have sent around 100 men to Nigeria, including black troopers who previously served in elite South African units. Others even fought as communist guerrillas against the South African Defence Force. …

“Into the Cannibal’s Pot,” that gift that keeps giving, addresses the early and prescient awakening of the Boers to the dangers of Islam. “Into the Cannibal’s Pot” documents how Afrikaner (and English) clergy—missionaries, as opposed mercenaries—went door-to-door in an attempt to convert South Africa’s Muslims to the religion of peace, Christianity.

UPDATE (5/13): FACEBOOK THREAD:

* US news reports are crediting these victories to the Nigerian government and military.

* If reader like the history of the Boers, which is exciting, read “Into the Cannibal’s Pot,” in which there is a fast-paced chapter. In fact, in the Intro, I note that men love heroic history and are being deprived of it—and of manhood.

UPDATED: Stay Strong, Pamela Geller

Free Speech, Islam, Jihad, Terrorism

First, let me say how grateful I am that my WND colleague, Pamela Geller, is safe and sound and still speaking her mind on matters Mohammad. As we say in Hebrew, Chazak Ve’ematz (grammatically incorrect when said to a female, but I don’t wish to complicate things here).

Next, let me say the following, given media depictions of Pamela, Robert Spencer and members of their group—who fell victim to an attack by American Islamists brandishing AK-47s and were further assailed by the craven, cowardly mainstream media: Those who call you and your outfit an “anti-Islamic hate group” are the haters. (To listen to the “Washington Compost,” in Mark Levin speak, you’d think Pamela was the offender.) There can be no doubt that the Southern Poverty Law Center, the authority media cite in their indictments of Pamela—hates for a living: the SPLC creeps hate any expression of individualism.

Thomas DiLorenzo long ago exposed the revenue-rich, “racial racketeering” of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) by going to The Source of its funding, “The Department of Fatherland Security, and probably other parts of the bureaucracy.” The SPLC’s latest mandate is “to ‘educate’ police on the ‘dangers’ posed by all us critics of unlimited government interventionism.”

Thanks Pamela for doing the work most of us are afraid to do: put would-be murderers and their vampiric muse, the Prophet Muhammad, in their proper place.

Breitbart Texas “was conducting an exclusive interview with Pamela about the Mohammad Art Exhibit and Contest,” when the attack took place:

… Officers told this writer that the two suspects drove up in a car. The two occupants of the vehicle got out and immediately began shooting at the security guard.

Witnesses who spoke with this writer said they heard the initial gunshots and said it sounded like a pack of firecrackers going off. They then heard police return fire on the suspects.

The suspects were left lying in the street next to their vehicle because police were concerned there might be some type of explosive device either on their bodies or in their car.

Attendees of the event were eventually taken by a school bus to a secure location about 5 miles away from the scene.

As for Texas law enforcement; awesome job in tackling and dispatching with a pistol the two ISIS-Americans:

Enter the two gunmen, whom Garland police said drove up to a police car that was blocking an entrance to the exhibition hall and opened fire with assault rifles. Both men were quickly killed by one of the hired guards — a local traffic patrol officer whose name has not been released — who returned fire with a semiautomatic pistol. … “He did a very good job and he probably saved lives,” said Harn, the police spokesman.
