Bullock: Life Imitates Art

Sandra Bullock’s still on a hormonal high after staring in a film (did not see “Blind Side”; would never go see it) about a white family adopting a black young man, or boy, or baby. (Is there any other kind of adoption? Do affluent blacks ever adopt poor white kids, or is such charity a one-way affair?)

Bullock might be imitating art, or emulating the trend of assembling Benetton babies begun by Brangelina and the moronic Madonna. At least Bullock has not searched out exotic kids as has crazy Angie; Louis Bardo Bullock is from New Orleans.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to homeschooling mothers for whose kids BAB and IlanaMercer.com are required reading. As one of my editors once said, “My home schooled kids receive Mercer’s Constitution-related columns as required reading.”

Always liked Ms. Bullock. As well as often being the best thing in a series of ordinary movies she has acquitted herself well outside the profession. Down to earth, generous, and, most admirably, for someone so liberal and successful, not a Hollywood scold. [And really funny.]

Yet, it had to happen eventually I suppose; taking up the white man’s burden – as shouldered by modern liberal white career women with a biological clock that no longer ticks and a nurturing instinct to fulfill – by buying yourself multicultural motherhood.

    [Peer pressure.]

When my wife Linda and I were discussing adoption, I opined that adopting a black child would be too difficult to integrate culturally. One can witness the Dunhams with grandson Barry (wife Michelle refers to Kenya as his “home country”). I did not want some American child with parents who might return and/or parents who were drug users….

There has not been cultural trouble with my daughter Anna – who has no interest in learning Chinese. (The girls abandoned in China were because of their draconian birth control policy, not because of goofy parents). Nor has she encountered any idiots who are telling her that she is “betraying her race”.

Linda, a social worker specializing in foster care, was also well aware of the overwhelming hostility of the National Association of Black Social Workers to whites adopting black babies:

I don’t expect that black couples (any?) adopt white babies (but then healthy white babies are in short supply). I don’t expect that Asians, Arabs, or Hispanics adopt many black babies
