The Motor City: A Microcosm Of South Africa

Steven Malanga, the author of “Feral Detroit,” an only slightly politically incorrect City Journal tract, fails to mention the Other Method deployed in driving middle-class whites away: cruel, craven, targeted crime.

“Over the last half-century, [Detroit’s] population has shrunk by 50 percent, from about 1.8 million people to fewer than 900,000. Since 2000, the city has lost 35,000 residents. Detroit officials acknowledge that they see little prospect for a population turnaround soon. …”

“Though some blame Detroit’s population losses on larger economic forces, economists Edward Glaeser and Andrei Shleifer argue in a groundbreaking paper that the city’s problems are mostly self-inflicted. (The paper, called ‘The Curley Effect,’ gets its name from legendary Boston mayor James Curley, who favored Irish residents and pushed other groups out.) After winning election in 1973, Detroit’s first black mayor, Coleman Young, consolidated his power, driving white residents, who had voted against him, out of the city by withdrawing services from their neighborhoods. Eventually, Glaeser and Shleifer write, Detroit became ‘an overwhelmingly black city mired in poverty and social problems’—and shrinking fast.”

In South Africa, the wanton acts at Wichita and Knoxville are a daily occurrence. And here’s a filthy little secret I discovered in researching my near-complete book, Into The Cannibal’s Pot: Lessons For America From Post-Apartheid South Africa: Whites are being culled in greater proportion to their numbers in the population. (Stay tuned)

The caliber of Anglo- and Afrikaner human capital lost to black crime is inestimable. An example is Brian Hahn, my husband’s (Ivy-League educated) mathematics professor at UCT. (“After completing his BSc in applied mathematics and physics and his BSc (Hons) in theoretical physics at UCT, he undertook a PhD on the optimisation of scattering amplitudes at the University of Cambridge.”)

There are hundreds of examples of true brilliance extinguished by barbarism. Other than untold sorrow, what are the financial costs of such losses?

Dear Ilana, I’m glad to read of an impending book from you, and I look forward to purchasing a copy. I also want to say how well your website/blog has evolved since inception. It has become a unique source of information and reasoned opinion. I now look at it daily as I do Drudge. Congratulations on this. I look forward to learning of an explosion in traffic. And very well-deserved.

    My best, always, Haym.

    [Thanks, H.]

New York City used to have a large “middle class” and even manufacturing – now it has a small cadre of the very rich, some “bohemian” types. and a large 3rd world contingent.

    Myron,
The ‘Entourage’ boys come from Queens. Is part of that Borough still recognizably Caucasian and blue-collar?

Good to see you are talking about a new book. Too long since the last one. [Broad Sides will be out in a new edition for Xmas sales, with bonus material. It’s a good primer for liberty.] When you are ready to sell, put me down as a buy –plus a couple extra for my friends. You could have a major career in popular journalism, if you would just lower the price for your own integrity. Which unfortunately for your career but fortunately for us, you seem absolutely unwilling to do. A woman in the midst of silly girls and girly men is Ilana Mercer. Thanks for what you are and think and the courage you exemplify in writing it.

    [Many thanks]

Well and darn well said Mercer. Too many Americans think that our world is like a rerun of “Leave it to Beaver”. Americans in “neutral” communities are beat down by the cultural perceptions that they are dealing with clones of Oprah Winfrey and Bill Cosby, not the anti-social thugs of real life. I’ve said it before in this particular blog: “America is a lot closer to South Africa than most people realize.”

The area where I grew up has made large efforts to give sanctuary to illegals and other minorities. What was once a decent middle-class area is now filled with gang tags, crime and welfare cases. Whites move out and illegals move in. The county does nothing and accuses everyone who complains of being “racist” at not welcoming our new crime prone neighbors. Why metal detectors in school are normal you see! What’s that? You didn’t need metal detectors when the school was 90% white but do now that it’s 60% minority? Well you must be a racist! What’s that? You garage was broken into again and you woke up to find your truck missing from outside of your house (happened to someone I know more than once)? Certainly it’s your own fault for being a filthy racist and depriving these poor people of equal wealth.

And on it goes until the whites leave and are accused of “white flight.” As if it was the behavior of whites which caused the crime rates to soar and violence against them to escalate. Why we should pass a law to require whites to live in an area where they and their children are terrorized by minorities! That would be only fair and, of course, so not racist.

Just checking out the statistics on the schools of my old neighborhood Sunnyside/Woodside Queens – rougly 45 to 65% Hispanic, 20 – 35% Asian, 50% take “English” as a FOREIGN LANGUAGE – 72% in poverty, 90% eligible for free or reduced lunch (my Junior High now has free breakfast and lunches for everyone – no wonder why taxes went way up! – we used to brown bag it, go to our folks, or eat a sandwich from a local place). Thanks to Ted Kennedy, the neighborhood seems much different.
Was mainly English speaking Irish/Italian/Jews and smatterings of other Caucasians – no longer. But at least it didn’t turn into a Ghetto Wasteland like Detroit.

I moved from Albuquerque, NM to Oklahoma thirty-one years ago so my fourteen year old son would not have to go to a school where the police were the hall monitors. Also because Oklahoma hired on merit, but that’s another story.
