I'll Take Over Oil, If You Want Me To

Barack Obama, Business, Energy, Environmentalism & Animal Rights, Regulation

The political Idiocracy, Democrats such as James Carville and Republicans like Sarah Palin, brayed so loudly for Big Daddy O to take over where Big Oil was failing to stop the spill in the Gulf of Mexico—that BHO relented. Baiting Barack with a takeover is cruel—to all of us.

“It is my job to make sure that everything is done to shut this down,” the president declared in the first news conference the People’s Presidency has given in quite some time.

The meddlers got what they demanded, and then some:

Obama announced new steps to deal with the aftermath of the spill, including continuing a moratorium on drilling permits for six months. He also said he was suspending planned exploration drilling off the coasts of Alaska and Virginia and on 33 wells under way in the Gulf of Mexico.

BHO beat on breast, apologizing for making “the mistake of believing that oil companies ‘had their act together; when it came to assessing worst-case scenarios.” Be careful what you ask for, Silly Sarah.

BHO’s previous stance on the spill made sense to me:

“while the government was overseeing the operation, BP had the expertise and equipment to make the decisions on how to stop the flow. … BP was responsible for the cleanup and the government was accountable to make sure the company did it.”

BP’s incentives to clean up and minimize mounting costs it is incurring are manifestly obvious. Obama resisted imputing evil motives to the company just becasue it was Big Oil; our political Idiocracy did not.

As to the state of the operation to stop a spill that “has surpassed the Exxon Valdez in Alaska as the worst in U.S. history: BP [is working] furiously to pump mud-like drilling fluid into the blown-out well. It [is] an untested procedure but seemed to be working, officials said Thursday.”

Update II: Barack To The Border

Barack Obama, Homeland Security, IMMIGRATION

WSJ: “President Barack Obama will send 1,200 National Guard troops to the Mexican border, an administration official said Tuesday, following calls from politicians in both parties to step up the fight against illegal immigration and border violence.”

Here’s the rub: “The troops would not act in a law-enforcement capacity, but would provide intelligence, surveillance and training.”

All code for making sure a couple of Ramoses and Compeans don’t shoot an invader in the bottom. What will ensue will be the prosecution of the Joe Arpaios of the south-west.

These guards will be instructed to act as glorified traffic cops—properly directing the flood of people into the US—who’re on the border so that Barack (didn’t Bush pull a similar stunt?) can say, “Under my administration, enforcement on the Mexican border peeked.”

The presence of a National Guard crippled by protocol and PC laws designed to protect trespassers—this is nothing more than a political ploy.

What of ‘Posse Comitatus‘? I’m not sure.

Update I (May 26): I wish readers (okay, Huggs) would fight the blind spot they have about Bush, who would wrestle a crocodile for an illegal alien, provided the latter was of low character and criminally inclined, of course.

See the three amigos in “A Vacation From Reality.” While in reading mode, I recommend “José Medellín’s Dead; Cue The Mariachi Band.”

Update II: The Bush record is similar, so you know that sending the Guards to pose on the border and dreaming up a “comprehensive approach to illegal immigration” are quite compatible.

The NYT: From 2006 to 2008, President George W. Bush made a larger deployment of Guard troops under a program called Operation Jump Start. At its peak, 6,000 Guard troops at the border helped build roads and fences in addition to backing up law enforcement officers.
Those Guard troops contributed to the arrest of more than 162,000 illegal immigrants, the rescue of 100 people stranded in the desert and the seizure of $69,000 in cash and 305,000 pounds of illicit drugs.
The soldiers will not directly make arrests of border crossers and smugglers, something they are not trained to do.

The Washington Times seconds the case made on this blog:

The decision puts Mr. Obama squarely in the footsteps of his predecessor, President George W. Bush, who in 2006, just as the Senate was beginning an immigration overhaul debate, announced his own deployment of National Guard forces to the border.
Mr. Bush sent National Guard troops to build fencing and other infrastructure and help the U.S. Border Patrol with surveillance and support tasks, though they were not allowed to enforce immigration laws. Mr. Bush called the troops a temporary measure to fill a gap while he boosted the number of Border Patrol agents.
But the troops faced so many restrictions on their activities, including carrying weapons, that some Border Patrol agents said they found themselves assigned to what they called “nanny patrol,” which amounted to protecting the National Guard troops.

Pimp My President

Barack Obama, Celebrity, Economy, Pop-Culture, The Zeitgeist

A genteel soiree? A sedate supper befitting times of austerity? Those are not for our BHO. High culture? Forget that. It’s disco time at the White House. It’s boogie time, as Beyonce shakes her pelvis along side Mr. and Mrs. BHO. Byron York (via Larry Auster) gives us the lowdown:

“At a time when the unemployment rate stands at 9.9 percent, when jobs are still being lost, when worries about the global economy are causing breathtaking volatility on Wall Street, when millions of Americans who still have jobs are worrying more than ever about the safety of their retirement savings — at a time when all that is going on, the Obama White House has turned itself into a showcase of glitzy extravagance.”

Wednesday night’s White House state dinner for Mexican President Felipe Calderon was, as far as the dinner itself was concerned, a fairly routine, if sumptuous, affair. The East Room was a grand setting, and First Lady Michelle Obama brought in a favored Chicago chef to put together a complex and expensive menu. “The main course of Oregon wagyu beef came with a Oaxacan black mole sauce with more than 20 ingredients that takes days to come together,” reported the Associated Press.

Of course state dinners are supposed to be special. But where the Obama/Calderon affair really hit the heights was in the festivities after the dinner, which took place in a huge tent

In Defense Of Obama’s Apologizing

Barack Obama, Conservatism, Foreign Policy, Individualism Vs. Collectivism

The following is taken from my new WND column, “In Defense Of Obama’s Apologizing”:

“… Contrary to conventional conservative wisdom, there is nothing wrong with expressing regret for wrongs done by your country’s government, as opposed to its people. This is a well-meaning, if perhaps inconsequential, gesture.

Face it, what Republicans are really fuming over is BHO’s public expiation for the Bush I foreign policy, for which they themselves cheered. …

I hope the next president apologizes for the many innocent Afghanis BHO is busy killing in that country.
As do I hope the next incumbent apologizes for this president’s shabby treatment of the Israeli prime minister, or of Mr. Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota.

It’s a bit late, but an apology on behalf of Harry S. Truman is in order for deliberately dropping on Hiroshima and Nagasaki the Little Boy and the Fat Man—as the atomic duo was dubbed affectionately—and vaporizing 210,000 innocent Japanese civilians…

Is ‘America,’ then, bad because of deeds its bureaucratic or political corps commits? Not at all. …”
