Emergency At The Border? Depends On Your Definition Of ‘Emergency’

Crime, Democrats, Donald Trump, Homeland Security, IMMIGRATION, Logic, Republicans

It’s all in the definition of an emergency. To the progressive Demopublicans, an endless stream of uninvited migrants swamping the country is not an emergency. Open borders are a good thing, never an emergency.

Dallas Times:

They came in pairs, by the dozens, hundreds. In one group, as many as 400 immigrants crossed the border here in a single, massive group.

Many are families. And some would soon sleep for the first time on U.S. soil — but out in the open, under the stars, because federal agents are having a difficult time processing them and getting them to shelter.

“What we’re seeing is something I haven’t seen in at least 10 years,” said Joe Romero, a veteran U.S. Border Patrol agent.

And yet, when asked whether he was witnessing an emergency on the border, Romero paused and kept his eyes on the road. He and his partner drove slowly Wednesday in the shadow of a fence, long stretches of it lined with migrants waiting to be transported to begin the process of seeking asylum.

To The Economist, the fact that there are fewer individuals crossing unimpeded into the US than in years past implies that … there is no emergency.

If America has a border crisis, it comes not from any sort of invasion—in the year to September 2018, the authorities caught 396,579 people trying to cross the southern border, fewer than half as many as in 2007

Logic is not a strong suit, these days.

as of September there was a backlog of 319,000 pending asylum cases. Between 2010 and 2017 the number of asylum claims filed annually rose from 28,000 to 143,000, with many coming from Venezuela, Guatemala and El Salvador. Political instability and violence in Central America pushes people north. But some are also drawn by America’s inefficient asylum system, which lets people stay and work while their claims are assessed.

The real problem is structural. America’s immigration-enforcement system was designed to cope with the sort of migration that historically came from Mexico—single men looking for work, eager to dodge immigration police. It is not suited to today’s flow, which consists largely of families and children eager to present themselves to police so they can claim asylum. Sadly, ambitious immigration reform has eluded Washington for years, and this administration is unlikely to take up that poisoned chalice (see Lexington).

AND, coming in drives for all that free stuff.

Rashida Tlaib Violates (Cohen) Hearing Rules, Suggests Republican Mark Meadows Is Racist

Culture, Democrats, Donald Trump, Etiquette, Race, Racism, Republicans

Congress is increasingly occupied by rubbish—the kind of representative who is constitutionally incapable of honoring timeworn rules of etiquette.

At the Michael Cohen testimony before Congress, a smug and smarmy attack dog, Rashida Tlaib, alighted on Rep. Mark Meadows.

With no warning, rabid Rashida accused him of the possibility of racism. Why so? Because the Republican had brought HUD official Lynne Patton along to the hearing earlier on Wednesday:

“Just to make a note, Mr. Chairman, just because someone has a person of color, a black person working for them, doesn’t mean they aren’t racist. And it is insensitive that some would even say — the fact that someone would actually use a prop, a black woman, in this chamber, in this committee, is alone racist in itself,” Tlaib said.

Meek Meadows, being a Republicans, folded, instead of rubbing Rashida’s nose it in.

Ilhan Omar Discovers That America, Left and Right, Is Predominantly Pro-Israel

Democrats, Islam, Israel, Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Left-Liberalism And Progressivisim, Republicans, UN

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) discovered that America, left and right, is still pro-Israel.

In a tweet, Omar had implied that “Republicans are being bribed into supporting Israel by AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee):

“It’s all about the Benjamins baby,” [Omar said] quoting Puff Daddy’s ’90s paean to cash money. Omar subsequently specified that she was talking about spending from the likes of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, better known as AIPAC, the powerful pro-Israel lobbying organization.

Neoconservative Nikki Haley piled on, pointing out (in broken English) that quips like the one made by Omar were an everyday occurrence at the UN.

My point is not to argue the substance of what Omar said—although I think her point against lobbyists for foreign states is a serious point.

My point here is to simply underscore how different the US is from the rest of the West, when it comes to Israel. It’s a lesson Ilhan Omar, who identifies as a Muslim refugee, has just found out, and will work to change, no doubt.

There will come a time, soon, with more Muslim immigration, when the tipping point will be reached and the US will be more like the UN which practically opens every one of its sessions with a pro forma resolution condemning Israel.

UPDATED (2/9): DEM Witches: Humor Is Not Acceptable (‘Mr. Chairman, I See That Your Five Minutes Is Up’)

Comedy & Humor, Democrats, Gender, Republicans

“Mr. Chairman, I see that your 5 minutes are up,” said acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, a Republican, to the boss man, Democrat Jerrold Nadler, leading the House Judiciary inquisition against him.

Nadler laughed. He got the humor of being instructed (by the man who was not in charge) to wrap it up.

Whitaker took a chance to shoot back at Nadler, when the chairman’s questioning about his involvement with the Muller investigation slipped beyond the time limit for each lawmaker.

“Mr. Chairman, I see that your five minutes is up,” he said.

The room then broke into laughter as Nadler looked up with a shocked face that melted into a grin. He noted that he did not enforce the five-minute rule during Whitaker’s opening statement, then asked him to “answer the question, please.”

But Sheila Jackson Lee, joyless Democrat from Texas, was having none of the mirth. Is there a grimmer coven of witches than the Democrat women in Congress?

“Jackson Lee fired back at the perceived light-hearted comments”:

“Mr. Attorney General, we’re not joking here. And your humor is not acceptable.

She said that Congress has a duty and a right to ask him questions, and she told him that he needs to “behave appropriately,” and she will do the same.

Jackson Lee went on to press Whitaker on if he had discussed Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation with President Trump or members of his administration.

(House Judiciary Committee member Rep. Val Butler Demings (D-FL) was even scarier than Jackson Lee because so much more stupid.)
