Cooter spent protracted time with a cross-section of the country’s maligned militias, for a PhD. in sociology, I presume. As hard as the Egg Head from CNN tried to extract from her the line the Southern Poverty Law Center peddles about many patriotic Americans, he came away empty handed (and headed).
Although talker Monica Crowley has blamed Obama for the Missouri State police report entitled “The Modern Militia Movement,” and dated February 20, 2009 (it warned about subversives like … me), I believe it was initiated in the Bush era. Once again, here too, there is no difference between the Republicans, when in power, and the Dems in their statist collaboration to defame the best of America.

I don’t believe that any group of white blue collar workers would naturally want to attack the local police, another blue collar group.
I think, as Richard Hoste has argued, that it’s far more likely to turn out to be a case of entrapment by some ambitious prosecutor trying to please his/her political masters.

I am in total agreement regarding the SPLC, which appears to exist primarily for the purpose of encouraging the police to harass people who have political views that make the usual suspects uncomfortable.
Isn’t it funny how the same folks who will prattle on for hours about Bin Laden’s grievances, or the plight of the so-called Palestinians, will never apply the “old grievances” approach to their fellow countrymen? This sort of thing does not happen in a vacuum. This blog is one of the few places where this matter is discussed honestly, and I appreciate that.
The MIAC report story is complicated, and I freely admit that I do not know all the details about it. It has SPLC fingerprints all over it, just from its rhetorical content. Chuck Baldwin is an excellent source on the matter. VDARE and Lew Rockwell also have a lot of information on it. The latter two are, of course, considered hate groups by the SPLC. Then again, so is AEI. You can’t make this stuff up.
I like how (as you said) egghead tries to lead her, twice, into saying that militias are made up of fanatics. He even allowed himself an effete little “Yeah?” of frustration after being shot down the second time. If egghead wants to see a fanatic, he need only look in the mirror during this daily depilation.
From what I’ve read, the Hutaree are an apocalyptic religious cult that happens to be armed, not a militia as we would normally think of one. Naturally, the media has found a piece of meat it enjoys gnawing.
Militias, good or bad, are there for a reason. When the citizens, benign or militant, had confidence that the government was governing in their best interest there were no militias. It has been obvious for many years now that said government is governing for many reasons but the good of the country is not one of them.

I expected that the FBI had used an ‘agent provocateur” in the investigation. It’s standard operating procedure. Andrei Sakharov and other dissidents were accused of “anti-Soviet agitation” and the Chinese dissidents have similar accusations thrown at them. Now we have the frenzied attempt to smear militias, Tea Parties, or anyone who dislikes the Welfare-Warfare Leviathan with the same broad brush. Undoubtedly, when there are several million people opposing Obama et al, one can find some wackos in any movement. But the basic theme is that the “right wing” dissent is racist, violent, and psychotic. Some of this goes back to Hofstadter’s 1964 “Paranoid Style in American Politics” ,the smear campaign against Goldwater, and various purges by Buckley of “disrespectable” conservatives. Rest assured that any act of violence associated with the “right wing” will be exaggerated and overreported and be made to appear as typical. C’est la vie.
I was favorably impressed with Amy’s argument from her facts, but not by her interlocutor’s attempts to lead. Look at the screen: “They want a revolution” is the network’s bottom line, but not Amy’s, if you listen to the clip.
She stood her ground but they redrew it, in the manner they desired. Who can trust TV?
