UPDATE II: Chris Matthews Offers Profundities On What’s Behind Trump

America, Donald Trump, Left-Liberalism And Progressivisim, Media, Nationhood, Political Philosophy, Republicans

Chris Matthews of Hardball offered a most unusual commentary, unusual because insight and depth are rare these days at MSNBC (the network that fired Pat Buchanan):

Trump stands out there with something the other candidates lack, a compelling message. Trump speaks, like it or not, as an American. He goes after Putin [sic], the Chinese, the Pope and the presidents of Mexico. He even says he’ll be even-handed with Israel and its neighbors.

Trump speaks as a nationalist, that’s how he talks. He speaks not of how he’ll handle the job of president—how he’ll operate the government of Washington, what bills he will sign or veto, but, rather, how he will lead America in the world.

Trump’s rivals for the presidency speak of government; he speaks of country, this country, and that makes all the difference. Someone like Rubio cannot contest Trump on this level. It’s too late for him to try or even imagine fully what Trump is doing. Rubio cannot at this late stage muster a winning strategy.

Trump has one. It’s in his slogan. Make America great again.

UPDATE II:

UPDATED: ‘All In’ Tartlet’s Distaste For ‘The Trump Coalition’

America, Donald Trump, Left-Liberalism And Progressivisim, Media

Just as I was starting to tune in to MSNBC’s Chris Hayes more frequently—I realize this is not saying much, but these days, MSNBC’s daytime news programming is better than Fox’s—when on came a self-important creature named Olivia Nuzzi (three minutes and 45 seconds into the clip titled “The Trump Coalition”).

This affectatious Millennial cut her journalistic teeth by going public with a salacious tell-all starring … herself, of course, as the perspicacious Democratic intern. (Please don’t make me read this girl’s diarrheic, mushy, thinking-averse, pop-politics. I do enough penance for you, my reader.)

The Nuzzi tart’s attitude to Trump’s thumping majorities was that of calculated contempt. Donald Trump addresses them, she psychologized, at the level with which they are comfortable. He connects with them on a visceral, not intellectual plain (it goes without saying that Nuzzi thinks Trump supporters are truly stupid).

Nuzzi speak: “What defines these people … ” “They” [the silly people] don’t like politicians because of the way [politicians] speak. [After all, stupid people can’t grasp wonk talk like me, Nuzzi.] “Trump talks at a lower level.” That’s what these people like about him.”

Arrogant girl.

Left and right, Trump has broad support among Americans. “Journalists” as young as Nuzzi ought to treat their subjects with dignity. The people she writes about know a thing or two Nuzzi doesn’t yet know and probably will never know.

If anything, Trump’s army is reciprocating; returning The Love. Donald Trump, unlike this little Lena Dunham of journalism, truly loves the Common American.

For his part, Chris Hayes, at least, thanked his pro-Trump interviewees who seemed hip to his bias, but were ever so gracious. What I heard from them was: “I like businessmen,” “I like bold,” he might fix things in D.C., “I voted for Obama twice.”

Wow, do Hayes and his hussy guest have a handle on this complex and oddly marvelous uprising (not)!

UPDATE 2/25:

Conservatism Is An Empty Election Slogan

Conservatism, Constitution, Economy, GUNS, Left-Liberalism And Progressivisim, Republicans, Taxation

In which Barely A Blog’s resident physicist, Myron Robert Pauli*, reminds believers and dreamers that a Republican congress has never balanced a budget and that a Republican president that balances a budget is as elusive as Big Foot:

In reaction to the “Dime Store New Deal” of Dwight Eisenhower, Barry Goldwater and L. Brent Bozell Jr. penned a compact book called “The Conscience of a Conservative.” This became the basis of Goldwater’s 1964 campaign and Reagan’s 1964 “Time for Choosing” speech. It birthed the Reagan “conservative triumph” of 1980, the reshaping of the modern Republican Party, and the “conservative movement.” (Bernie Sanders could argue that the “progressive” economic leanings of the Democratic Party withered after Lyndon Johnson but this column will stick to Republicans.)

Modern Reagan conservatism was a four-legged chair hinging on four basic tenets. But how are those tenets holding up in 2016?

[1] LIBERTARIANISM: Always the weakest of the legs, most Republican respect for the Bill of Rights starts and ends with the Second Amendment. Even repealing the “regulating interstate commerce” aspects of the War on Drugs is beyond the scope of the GOP. Just this week, there is the clamoring to force Apple to remove encryption on personal phones. But for proof of the dearth of libertarianism and the Bill of Rights, one need not go any farther than to ask Jose Padilla.

[2] SOCIAL CONSERVATISM: While the “moral” rhetoric bellows periodically, the moral train pulled out of Leave-It-To-Beaver land a long time ago and has passed by Miley Cyrus’s twerking. Only 1 of 9 blacks are born in wedlock; among whites it’s a slightly better 1 in 2. One can denounce the trends or howl at the phases of the moon but pre-marital sex, booze, drugs, abortions and gay marriages show no sign of ever disappearing. The leading 2016 GOP candidate among “evangelical Christians” is a publicly vulgar serial adulterer. The military is a Global Force for Transgenderism. As was said long ago, the Kingdom of God is “not of this world.” The million fetuses terminated each year neither know nor care who the president is.

[3] FISCAL CONSERVATISM: Please name me a major program ever terminated by the Republicans – OK, the A-12 Navy Bomber. For every cut, Republicans have been expanding Medicare, inventing Obamacare (as Romneycare with the help of Professor Gruber), Leaving No Child Behind, subsidizing ethanol, pushing American Dream Downpayments, as well as bailing out banks and auto companies. This includes issuing driver’s licenses and preferential tuition to criminal trespassers (a.k.a. “undocumented” aliens).

Most Republicans run out of the room when asked to name a budget cut. To his credit, Ted Cruz has listed several “small” cuts (such as the National Endowment for the Humanities and Housing & Urban Development), but they are more than offset by proposed increases in Defense. Even without bloating up the Defense Department, Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid is the 800 lb. gorilla of spending, sucking up 10% of GDP and always growing.

Cutting taxes on “the filthy rich” increases the deficit. Most Republicans cite the tired canard “cut waste, fraud, and abuse,” or the silly nonsense of passing a “Balanced Budget Amendment.” The Republican Congress never balances a budget, the Republican President never balances a budget so let’s send the problem on to Sonia Sotomayor and the Supreme Court. By the way, as reference, the Federal Budget under “liberal” Harry Truman in 1948 was $35.6 billion, with a $6 billion SURPLUS. If you believe that Republicans are fiscal Conservatives, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

[4] ANTI-COMMUNISM: Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the government has spent well over $20 trillion on “defense” with never ending undeclared wars bringing “democracy” to the Third World and arming both Shiite and Sunni nutcases. It is far from clear that either Goldwater or Reagan would have gone for this neocon vision of perpetual warfare. The commies are gone but the defense budget in constant dollars $$ is larger now than during Vietnam, Korea, or the Reagan buildup! And Republicans clamor for MORE $$$! Republicans attack “liberals” for “throwing money at a problem,” but still keep troops in Italy in case Mussolini rises from the grave! Even here, Trump has served a purpose in chewing off some of the rot from the last surviving leg of the old conservative coalition.

Conservatism is long since over – dead as Yogi Berra!

The Murdoch Media: Root ‘N Branch For Marcobot

Donald Trump, Elections, Gender, Left-Liberalism And Progressivisim, Media, Politics, Republicans

“The Murdoch Media: Root ‘N Branch For Marcobot” is the current column, now on WND (please Like, Tweet, and generally Share column on social media). An excerpt:

“Wish fulfillment is “the satisfaction of a desire through an involuntary thought process.” This Freudian term encapsulates the coverage of the riveting 2016 primaries by the Megyn Kelly wing (or coven) of the Murdoch Media.

Yes, a news personality—a showgirl really—is running more of Roger Ailes’ show than she should. And, as Newsmax reports, not everyone in the org is pleased with Kelly’s “Trump-fueled stardom.”

Since the anchoring philosopher in Kelly’s life is Oprah Winfry’s protégé, TV pop-psychologist Dr. Phil—the anchor ought to appreciate a psychological idiom that encapsulates her coverage of the New Hampshire primary, in particular, and of Donald Trump in general.

Look, no-one is discounting the news-worthy value of good leg and hair action and some, but not much, fine couture. However, Kelly File coverage is defined by little to no analysis approximating reality, hence “wish fulfillment.”

What the likes of lightweight Dana Perinno, Mega-ego Kelly and their male friendlies have made manifest is that: 1) Navigating the shoals of reality is hard for them, and 2) They’re hoping against hope that someone will politically slay The Donald dragon.

The central question around which these Marco-Rubio enamored performers have thus framed the New Hampshire primary’s results is: Who is going to beat Mr. Trump, the Republican front runner, who’d just triumphed “bigly” in NH.

The headline on kingmaker Kelly’s Fox News website was, “What’s the anti-Trump strategy now?” (It has since vanished.) And, “Who will the lead GOP establishment?” On February 10, Kelly scolded Jeb Bush for “having his eye on the wrong guy,” and failing to take on the “quarterback who’s running with the ball.”

To the extent The Kelly File covers the Trump phenomenon, coverage is given over to plotting against the candidate and, by extension, the Americans he represents.

The desire among select members of the Murdoch Media for a Marco Rubio victory is in plain view. Kelly and her carefully selected compadres are hoping against hope that Trump will stop winning. Their focus, to the exclusion of all else, is on who’ll stop their political bête noire.

Coverage that is directed toward desired outcomes is no coverage at all.
