Higher Rates And Hussein’s Healthcare Go Hand In Hand

Debt, Healthcare, Political Economy, Reason, The State

“You know what the insurance companies are like,” I was told by a statist neighbor, who adores Obama but concedes her healthcare premiums have gone up. How does the irrational individual solve the cognitive incongruity of rising prices and her undying love of the state?

She blames markets.

But even the stupid statist press can deny no longer that “insurance is at dramatically higher rates,” and some of the reasons are these:

First, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) sets minimum standards for benefits, including mental-health and substance-abuse treatment, maternity care, prescription drugs, and rehabilitative care, which were not included in many of the old plans. Also, insurance companies are now required to take all comers, regardless of their health status, and so rates are rising to cover their costs as well.

Here The Heritage Foundation is forced into explaining the economically obvious:

…Contrary to a key intention of the legislation, the combination of mandates and taxes will not help to reduce the deficit. In fact, the PPACA will likely increase the deficit by an average $75 billion per year, and as a result, the nation’s publicly held debt will be $753 billion higher at the end of 2020. Such astronomical debt crowds out other productive investments and will lead to an estimated 670,000 lost job opportunities per year. …
he policy combination of spending and taxes alters the macroeconomic performance of the economy and feeds back onto the budget. A dynamic simulation shows that the higher initial costs are not an investment that pays off with a higher return in later years. Indeed, these front-loaded costs slow economic growth with higher inflation and higher interest rates, which overwhelm the benefits the proposal hoped to gain in later years.
The bill’s taxes, penalties, and fees on investors and businesses will decrease the amount of investment in the economy. This reduced investment will in turn lead to a decline in productivity, causing the economy to produce $706 billion less worth of goods and services. A smaller economic pie means that workers earn lower wages and salaries. Higher taxes on investment also put upward pressure on interest rates as investors seek to achieve their after-tax desired rate of return. …
…Lower wages reduce the amount of taxable income that could otherwise have been achieved. This will both increase the deficit and grow the total debt—which in turn puts upward pressure on interest rates and crowds out some savings that could have gone to new productive business investments.
Higher interest rates mean that more American tax dollars will go toward paying the interest on the federal debt rather than paying down the principal. Simulations using dynamic analysis estimate that the government would spend an average $23 billion more per year on interest rate payments over the 2010–2020 year window than it would without the PPACA.

And from “Obama’s Politburo Of Proctologists”:

The pit of perverse incentives Papa Obama is engineering includes leveling the insurance industry, which by definition must discern and discriminate between applicants based on their health status (largely under individual control). Under his benevolent rule, private insurers will be subjected to a host of new regulations, “including a requirement to insure all applicants and a prohibition on pricing premiums on the basis of risk,” in the Cato Institute’s Michael Tanner’s rendering.
This means one thing: moral hazard. Writes libertarian economist Walter Block: “The greater the protection from the random expenses of sickness the greater the potential over-consumption of the item in question.”
We currently labor under “a seeming patchwork of indemnity insurance arrangements, managed care, private payment, and charity.” Yet the fewer the intermediaries interfering with the primary, patient-doctor relationship, the better the patient’s prognosis. The president’s prescription for too little freedom, however, is even less of the same!

More ‘Random’ Racial Attacks

Crime, Media, Race, Reason

Google Lakim Faust. No major American news outlet pops up on the search other than The Examiner’s report, which tells it like it is: “Indictments: Black man shot four whites because of race.” Next is CBS Crimesider, which covers up for Lakim Faust with the usual lame non sequitur: “A man who investigators think shot four people near a Greenville Wal-Mart appears to have planned the shooting but picked out his victims at random. …

Investigators haven’t found any links between Faust and the four victims, Aden said at a news conference. But evidence gathered during a search of Faust’s home appears to show he had some plan for the attack and wanted to shoot a number of people

Because no “links between Faust and the four victims” were identified—it is inferred that the motive for murder could not have been racial. This is classic backward reasoning.

In “Dropped Into The Black Hole Of Disinformation,” I traced this exculpatory illogic offered up by the Spokane Police with respect to the murder of WWII veteran Delbert Belton:

Mark Griffiths, another genius from the Spokane Police, seconded that “there was no indication that [the 88-year-old WWII veteran] would have known these people prior to the assault.” Ergo, the motive was robbery.
In non sequitur land, strangers do not harbor hate, and criminals do not multitask—in other words, never do they rob people while simultaneously acting out their darkest desires. (And, by logical extension, the Nazis, who killed millions of strangers, could not have been motivated both by hate and greed.)

The Examiner now features a “black on white crime” search chronicling what the liberal and libertarian media refuse to chronicle:

Black teen admits killing white man because he ‘had a hard day’
Second suspect arrested in beating death of Spokane veteran
Facebook: Picture of suspect wanted in murder of Spokane vet violates standards
New Black Panther leader: Hunt down and kill white people
Spokane police looking for black males in beating death of World War II veteran
Spokane remembers murdered WW2 veteran Delbert Belton in candlelight vigil, memorial fund set up
Senseless black on white crime…and NO outrage from ‘supposed’ black leaders
DHS employee’s website: ‘We are going to have to kill a lot of whites’

UPDATE II: Dropped Into The Black Hole Of Disinformation

Crime, Criminal Injustice, Media, Objectivism, Race, Racism, Reason

“Dropped Into The Black Hole Of Disinformation” is the latest column, now on WND. Some excerpts:

“There is no clear motive for why the murder happened,” a CNN reporter chanted robotically, in what has been for as long as I can remember SOP (standard operating procedure) in major media. Whenever a black murders a white—which is four times more often than the reverse—the salient features of the crime disappear into a black hole of disinformation.

By salient features I mean, in the main, information pertaining to the skin color of the perpetrator and victim, and the extraordinary brutality with which the villain typically goes about exterminating his victim.

Overkill is the word I’m looking for.

Observe the face of hate (Curtis Lavelle Vance’s) and the object of Vance’s hatred, news anchor Anne Pressly, of blessed memory. Then read the details of Vance’s assault on Pressly. Pressly’s pale, pretty face Vance pounded to an unrecognizable pulp. The killer aimed, very plainly, to annihilate her.

All too often submerged as well is the exquisite vulnerability of victims of unrecognized racial hatred.

Of this particular stark element, however, it was impossible to strip the murder of baby Antonio Santiago. …

… Trust the police in the evergreen and always pinko state to finesse the murder of a white veteran [Delbert Belton, 88, from Spokane, in Wash] by blacks with assurances that it was “a random attack.” Robbery was the sole motive in Belton’s murder.

These assurances were offered up by Spokane Police Chief Frank Straub. Not that anyone in the pinko state and beyond paused to ask, but why, if the beating of Belton was motivated by greed or need only, did the perpetrators proceed to pulverize grandpa’s face with “big heavy flashlights”?

Elementary, my dear Watson.

The boys in blue from the pink state may not be there to defend you when your turn comes, but they can be trusted to ennoble your killers.

The old man, explained the stupid Straub, “fought back against his attackers, and that may have contributed to the severity of the beating his received.”

Do you get Straub’s drift? Unless they state otherwise, goons of color harbor only the purest of motives when gunning for honky.

Since he was being interviewed by national media, Straub quickly expressed his commitment not to protecting Spokane residents from such killers, but to “institu[ting] a mentoring program” for the likes of Delbert Belton’s killers.

Au contraire. “These people” – the barbarians who blattered the veteran who’d survived the Battle of Okinawa – knew quite a bit about Belton … by the color of his skin.

As did Mona Yvette Nelson “know” Jonathan Paul Foster was The One she would kidnap, torture and torch. Nelson “knew” Foster from … his fair, white skin and red hair. …

Ilana, you are a national treasure. I have forwarded this to my contacts, as I almost always do. It is quite a coincidence that I had only hours ago sent you the fictional “letter” from the little boy who was shot in the face (murdered) because he and his mother were white.

UPDATE II: Oprah’s An Idiot (Hatred Imbibed With Mother’s Milk)

Celebrity, Crime, Law, Media, Race, Racism, Reason

Oprah Winfrey, who has been silent about the shooting of Sherry West’s 13-month old baby—and all of the other most common hate crimes (for, “In the real America, interracial violence is overwhelmingly black-on-white”)—was vocal in comparing the slaying, in self-defense, of Treyvon Martin (black) by George Zimmerman (Hispanic) to the grisly murder of Emmett Till by whites in Mississippi, over half a century ago (1955).

Let Professor Jonathan Turley, a liberal civil libertarian, tutor Oprah in the facts of the State of Florida v. George Zimmerman.

• While many have criticized Zimmerman for following Martin, citizens are allowed to follow people in their neighborhood.
• It was also lawful for Zimmerman to be armed.
• The question comes down to who started the fight and whether Zimmerman was acting in self-defense.
• Various witnesses said Martin was on top of Zimmerman and said they believed that he was the man calling for help. Zimmerman had injuries. Not serious injuries but injuries from the struggle. …
• A juror could not simply assume Zimmerman was the aggressor. After 38 prosecution witnesses, there was nothing more than a call for the jury to assume the worst facts against Zimmerman without any objective piece of evidence. That is the opposite of the standard of a presumption of innocence in a criminal trial.

Above all, Travyon Martin was not tortured. Rather, as overwhelming evidence showed, Martin might have been planning on doing the torturing himself.

UPDATE I: FACEBOOK THREAD: Oprah didn’t trivialize the death of ET; she was wrong on the facts and the logic, ergo an idiot. People just love feeling good about themselves by weeping forever over crimes that happened decades ago and have no relevance today, other than to keep alive the racial “grievance industry.”

UPDATE II (8/27): Hatred Imbibed With Mother’s Milk. (Via Robert Glisson on Facebook.)

Question: What mother trusts her baby to this lot? One raised by your typical, white, liberal-minded American, who believes that because she harbors no racial animus; others feel the same. Fine. Be stupid. But why toy with your tot?
