Some Acerbic Words On The Ukraine (2022), By Great Britain’s Great Sean Gabb

For reasons that escape my understanding, someone at The Daily Mail called me a few hours ago to ask my opinion on the present war between Russia and the Ukraine. Our discussion was organised about four questions. Here is the generality of what I said in answer to each of these questions:

Have we no duty to help the brave democrats in the Ukraine, who are yearning to be free of the neo-Soviet tyranny that Mr Putin represents?

No. It is none of our business what gang of bleary kleptocrats occupies the ministry buildings in Kiev. Any British politician who so much as whispers a desire for armed intervention should be hounded from office.

What about our friends in the former Warsaw Pact states of Eastern Europe? Are we to abandon these to the real possibility of creeping aggression from Moscow?

What friends? If you will pardon my French, these countries shat all over us in 2018-19. Admittedly because our own politicians were trying to sell us out, we needed support in our dealings with the European Union. Those supposed friends in Warsaw and the Baltic States had only to veto our compelled request to put off our departure for the French and Germans to cave in and start talking sense. They looked the other way then. We owe them nothing now.

And our commitment to the Atlantic Alliance?

Please do not mention the Americans. Leaving aside our sad entanglements since 1917, America is some kind of zombie apocalypse plus nuclear weapons that might not yet be past their use-by date. It has not won a war against an equally-matched power since it defeated itself in 1865. Its army nowadays is stuffed with the sort of people who, faced with a conventional battle against the Russians, would probably shoot their own officers if these were not themselves waddling away. The Americans as allies are a net liability.

What is your vision for British defence policy to 2030?

Switching the “climate change” budget to rebuilding our navy and air force. Our new ships and aeroplanes should be wholly designed and built in this country, and we should understand that their most likely use will be against the French and the Americans. At the same time, though this is a digression from the main answer, we might set about remaking England as the sort of country a reasonable man would risk dying to defend.

This is roughly what I said to the young woman who called. I doubt if any of it will be in tomorrow’s Daily Mail.

That said, had the rabbi not welcomed the stranger into the inner sanctum of his synagogue, throwing caution to the wind—heroics would have been unnecessary. More material, the incident could have been prevented had the country’s derelict “principal federal law enforcement agency” not welcomed Akram into the country.

The FBI has no shame. Duly, when the dust settled on the Texas synagogue incident, one of the FBI agents announced pro-forma that the attack on Beth Israel was … “not specifically related to the Jewish community.”

Jewish leaders were having none of it. They were quick to put the errant FBI in its place. Would that Christian leaders did the same, for they never pipe-up in the matter of the country’s black-on-white, daily deluge of hate crimes. Warn the flock that a pale, often-beautiful face can get them killed, will you?

At the mercy of a different kind of mediocrity was Serbian Novak Djokovic, the best tennis player in the world and a holder of 20 Grand Slam titles. Covid has given cover to legions of mediocre busybodies whose tentacles have enervated all fields; sports included. Under the cloak of Covid control, these tyrannical state stooges are suppressing and taming individuality and excellence. …”

To Sir Sidney With Love: Lessons For The Educational Idiocracy

British, and so subtle, To Sir, With Love (1967) was my favorite role played by Sidney Poitier, RIP. And what an object lesson it is for America’s disgraceful unionized teachers in the age of COVID.

Mr. Mark Thackeray, “an out-of-work engineer who turns to teaching in London’s tough East End,” loved his students, yet he disciplined them; taught them self-respect, a love of learning, a work ethic and a proportional sense of fun, not the degenerate sense of abandon that now infuses our progressive schools.

“Sir’s” lesson: Never give up on The Kids, but knock ’em into shape.

Teacher was to be addressed as “Sir” because the use of honorifics and proper names, not invented pronouns, is important in an ordered society. It denotes not only a healthy hierarchy and a respect for a figure of authority, but for each other. Thus Pegg is not “Babs” (we have to wonder what such a traditional educator would say of naming a child North, or Londyn, a black name).

After transforming one class into responsible, self-respecting adults ready to face life; Thackeray is offered an engineering job—something better than working with London’s tough, truant East End kids. But following their poignant farewell to him; he is overwhelmed with love for the kids and a sense of his real vocation. He shreds the promotion, realizing the next intake needs him just as much as the first. He has found his calling.

Once there were teachers.
